Solange Speaks On Being A 'Knowles' In Solange's interview in the Summer 2008 issue of Rap-Up magazine (on newsstands now), she speaks on the burden of being a 'Knowles'. Check out the extract below:

“At this point, it’s starting to hurt me more than help me because my family is sort of known as the new age Huxtables. We’re the clean-cut girls. But I got married at 17, had a kid at 17. Ever since I was younger, I always considered myself to be into more artistic things than [Beyoncé]. People just hear the [Knowles] name and they just put a stamp on it automatically.”

I've increasingly come to respect Solange's genuineness over the last few months. It really is refreshing in an industry that sees much of its stars assume the media-savvy, plastic/wooden personalities. More power to her...

Any thoughts?

I never viewed Solange & Beyonce as the same person, but come 2 think of it, it does kinda make sense... When u would see Beyonce doing interviews in her younger days, she looked all prissy & girly-girl (not that i'm knocking B, cuz she's a bad chick) & when you would see Solange in interviews she had the crazy color hair, the crazy lookin outfits, but when she came out i expected her music to be just as good as Beyonce's was becuz of her last name. I hope she does very well on this next album, i will definitley be in music stores on August 12th... On another note, i totally forgot that she was 17 when she had her baby & got married.

The Huxtables? Please get over your overrated self. The Knowles are not even near the Jackson family legacy, and they're virtually off the scene. The Knowles are greedy attention seekers willing to burn friends just to say they have so much money. And Beyonce's marketing is bigger than her true talent. I mean the article talks about her but if you look at magazines, online news portals, the media is curious about what Beyonce is doing. They are stuck on Brit Spears and Lindsay Lohan. Clean cut, Beyonce had an abortion, dates a rap ex crack dealer, father is an adulterer coke head, and Solange got knocked up and had a BeeBee gun wedding. Nothing clean cut, just get over your self. Please and start giving back to the community instead of looking for opportunities to talk about your status. Cracking up, Huxtables, Clean Cut. They better hope those rumored "tell all" books don't surface.

Oh please, Solange's image is just as handcrafted and manufactured as Beyonce's and every other singer. Just like Ashlee Simpson is the rebel artsy/fartsy sister and Jessica is the sugary sweet sister, Bey & Sol are the same. Solange had no choice but to go the "artsy" route because she couldn't directly compete with Beyonce. Solange's "image" is about as self influenced as Rihanna's "rocker" image, they are not risk takers they are record company clay like all the rest of them.

Um yeah the Huxtables. Why not? They are a rich family. Now not the Jacksons, but she never claimed that and the Jacksons are above the Huxtables. I don't find this statement shocking! Every artist is a little manufactured, but the real ones are the ones whose images are exactly or extremely close to who they truly are! You can feel Solange is real, she's not a puppet and she writes her own lyrics who are so far surprisingly good (especially God Given Name). Rihanna doesn't do anything, now that's different!

I don't really care all that much about the fact that she's a Knowles. All I know is the music she's doing right now is some classy robust rich ass shit! Would that more artists were out there tryna shake things up. I'm lookin forward to Solange's record. I think there is room for her and her sister. But FACT IS, her lyrics aren't soul-less like Ashanti. That's what seperate a real songwriter from a "lyrics fashionist". Solange is a songwriter and Ashanti is the latter. Solange can write pop songs too (she did and everyone can to pay the bills) but she can be deep as well (and everyone can't). Ashanti's lyrics have always been one-dimensional and have no soul whatsoever. NO, Solange isn't a puppet, she's manufactured a minimum like ALL artists (even Erykah Badu's image is calculated a minimum, Cee-Lo's too, ALL artists) but she's not a fake imo.
