Sorry about the slow(ish) posts today. I had the pleasure of interviewing a certain Mr Ne-Yo today in Central London - be on the lookout for that real soon. Anyway...

Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson performed her brand new single 'Spotlight' today on Good Morning America. Check out her interview as well as performance below:

Jennifer looked and sounded on-point! Awesome performance. Jen's self-titled LP hits stores on September 30th.

The video for Jennifer Hudson's debut single 'Spotlight' premiered on BET today, ahead of the Awards. I must say, I'm really liking the Chris Robinson directed clip. Though the concept has been done several times already, Jennifer's undeniable swagger and presence on screen made for a real engaging video. 'Spotlight' has grown on me considerably since my initial listen, something the video will most definitely serve to continue.

Entertainment Tonight caught up with Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson on the set of her much anticipated video for first single 'Spotlight'. Check it out:

Jennifer looked great and came across very well. Though 'Spotlight' didn't 'wow' me initially, it's grown on me considerably as of late. Here's hoping Jennifer's project lives up to the high expectations.

Stars Come Out For 'Sex & The City' Premiere Stars Come Out For 'Sex & The City' Premiere
The New York premiere for the much anticipated 'Sex & The City' movie took place yesterday. A number of high profile celebs made an appearance including Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson - who stars in the movie, Mary J. Blige, Michelle Williams and Lil' Kim - who also makes a brief cameo in the flick.

I must say, Jennifer Hudson and Michelle Williams looked particularly on-point. Even Kim made a decent showing; the age old adage 'less is more' definitely seemed to be one Kim took on board, as, having left the drag queen make-up at home, she looked the best she has done in a long while. Mary on the other hand looks like the gruelling tour schedule has caught up with her; she looked tired.

Jennifer Hudson - 'Spotlight' The long-awaited debut of Jennifer Hudson's first official single is over; 'Spotlight' surfaced earlier on today. I'm kinda on the fence with this one; it's certainly not what I expected. Is it me or does Jennifer sound kinda like she's holding back vocally? I'm here waiting for her to belt like we know she can, yet she doesn't. I'm guessing those calling for her to stop 'over-singing' will be appeased. Saying that, I do feel the song has 'grower' potential. Hudson's debut album is set to hit stores in September via J Records.

Jennifer Hudson - 'All Dressed Up In Love' Jennifer Hudson's contribution to 'The Sex & The City' movie soundtrack, a cut titled 'All Dressed Up In Love', has surfaced. Though not what I initially expected, the funky mid-tempo is a decent effort, that seems to match the tone of the film.

Hudson's Debut Due In September According to Billboard, Jennifer Hudson's long-awaited debut album will be released on September 30th via Arista.

Granted it's commendable that they didn't rush the album out to capitalize on her Oscar success, this date really has to stick this time, so as for people not to lose interest. What's more, the longer it's held back, the higher the expectations - something that may count against her. Here's hoping she delivers with this album.

In related news, industry veteran Clive Davis - the man behind Whitney Houston's success and more recently Jennifer Hudson and Leona - has been replaced as chairman over at Sony BMG (the parent label of J Records etc). Davis has been appointed a creative role in another part of the company (click here to read the full story). I wonder what implications this may have for Jennifer's project - considering Davis has been overseeing it since signing the 'Dreamgirls' star in 2006?

Check out this video of Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson singing 'Stand Up', a track that may be featured on her much-anticipated debut album, in her bathroom lol:

Wow! That was my first time hearing the track and I'm literally blown away. A-mazing...she really nailed it. With the 'Dreamgirls' hype having subsided, this really reminded me of why the anticipation is so high for Jennifer's album. I'm hoping the song gets a placement on the final tracklisting. Random note: the guy in the video with her is her boyfriend James Payton - who she has been dating since 1999.

Hudson Joins Perry's 'The Family That Preys' Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson has joined the cast of Tyler Perry's forthcoming movie 'The Family That Preys.' The drama focuses on 'two families from different sides of the tracks that become intimately involved in love and business.' Perry is, both, writing and producing the movie, himself, for Lionsgate. Alfre Woodward, Sanaa Lathan, Rockmund Dunbar and Kathy Bates will also co-star.

'Preys" will be Perry's sixth for Lionsgate, following the last year's box office hit 'Why Did I Get Married?' and 'Meet the Browns.' - due March. He's expected to follow 'Preys' with 'Madea Goes to Jail.'

Hudson has been working steadily since her 'Dreamgirls' breakthrough. She's finished work on 'Winged Creatures' and the 'Sex and the City' movie and she was recently cast in a an adaptation of the novel .The Secret Life of Bees.' {Source}

Jennifer Hudson Update The producer behind Leona Lewis' monster hit 'Bleeding Love', Ryan Tedder, has stated that there is a 'strong possbility' that he'll be working on the much-anticipated debut album by 'Dreamgirls' Jennifer Hudson. This comes on the heels, interestingly, of Tedder's confirmation that J Records label head Clive Davis is taking the album in a new direction - one consistant of "high-energy, beat-driven material with soulful hooks." Here what he had to say about the project:
They made half an album and ended up scrapping it. Clive — wisely, I think — said, 'No one's going to buy this. We're trying to turn her into Aretha Franklin, and that's not realistic. They scrapped a bunch of songs and started fresh".

"I heard a Timbland song that was by far the best song she's done. I do wish, and I know the label wishes, that this album had come out six months ago. But Clive's smart. He didn't want to just put out a crap album just because of the momentum" {Source}
It kinda figures. Considering it's been so long since 'Dreamgirls' came out, it was obvious something was up with the project. Still, it's good to see that Clive is making sure Jennifer delivers the best album possible. I'm real amped about Timbaland's contribution to the album...it'll be interesting to see what they come up with

Break-out star Jennifer Hudson has landed a role in the forthcoming 'Sex In The City' movie:

Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson has joined the cast of “Sex and the City: The Movie” for New Line Cinema, which begins filming next week in New York.

Hudson will play “Louise,” the assistant to Sarah Jessica Parker’s “Carrie Bradshaw” in the film based on the hit HBO comedy series.

The movie revolves around the four main characters’ lives in Manhattan four years after the series ended.

Hudson, who won a best supporting actress Oscar for “Dreamgirls,” recently completed production on Rowan Woods’ ensemble drama “Winged Creatures” starring Kate Beckinsale, Forrest Whitaker, Jackie Earle Haley and Dakota Fanning. Sony is distributing the film.

The former “American Idol” contestant is also in the studio working on her debut album for Arista Records, due for release in the first quarter of 2008.

Though the role doesn't seem to be major, I can't fault Jennifer for taking it. She's really working overtime to establish herself beyond her 'Dreamgirls' success; starring in two films, alongside recording her long-awaited album. More power to her.

As reported, the Fashion Rocks 2007 concert took place in New York City this week. A host artists performed at the star-studded event including Usher, Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys and Jennifer Hudson. Check out some of the performances below:

Usher & Mary J Blige.
It's A Man's World, Respect & Do I Do

Jennifer Lopez
Do It Well / Waiting For Tonight

Jennifer Hudson
Come Together

Alicia Keys
The Thing About Love

For the first time in the longest, I felt everyone did great. One of the standouts, for me, was Usher & Mary's performance. With the way Usher was nailing the James Brown choreography I was left thinking 'Justin who?'. Jennifer Hudson was also a standout; it was good seeing her sing something different. She really has a great stage presence too. I was pleasantly surprised with J. Lo's performance - she is far from a great vocalist, but her live singing has improved a lot.

Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson recently opened up about the direction of her highly anticipated album. Speaking with Fashion Rocks magazine, the 'Dreamgirls' star had the following to say:

“It’s not hip-hop,” she says firmly. “Let’s just say that. I don’t have anything against it, but it’s not the music that I like to sing. There’s some pop in there, and some R&B-soul, but,” she pauses for emphasis, “not hip-hop.”

Not sure how to read into this one. The quote makes it seem like she has a problem with Hip Hop, but I just see it as her telling it like it is. Nothing she's done prior to now has been Hip Hop influenced, so why would her album be?

Kanye West - Can't Tell me Nothing

This DJ Toomp produced track is scheduled to be the first single from Kanye's upcoming third album 'Graduation'. 'Can't Tell Me Nothing' is a decent mid-tempo song, which sounds a lot like a typical Kanye track i.e. sample-laden. Having said this, I'm unsure why they would select this as the first single; it doesn't strike me as first-single material. I feel that he needs to come harder than this. It'll be interesting to hear what the other material from 'Graduation' sounds like.

Cassie - Sometimes (ft. Ryan Leslie)

After the flopping of Cassie's 2nd single 'Long Way 2 Go' and the backlash she received from her terrible live performances, I assumed she had disappeared into music obscurity. However, she has posted this new song 'Sometimes' on her Myspace page, stating that it's the first completed track from her current studio sessions with producer Ryan Leslie. To my surprise, I'm actually feeling the track. It's well-known that Cassie has very little vocal ability, but her delivery on this is better than I've heard from her before; Ryan Leslie's production is on-point too. I doubt the track is likely to gain her anymore fans, but it's still good nonetheless.

LISTEN: Sometimes (ft. Ryan Leslie)

Jennifer Hudson - Special (ft. Papoose)

I'm not entirely sure whether this new Jennifer Hudson track is from her upcoming album or a mixtape; either way it's good to hear some new material from the Oscar winner. 'Special' is a well-produced mid-tempo track, in which Hudson really showcases her power-house vocals. I do expect better from her, though, and hope that her album has more to offer.

As you may have noticed, new tracks from Ne-Yo's sophomore CD 'Because of You' have been leaking pretty quickly. Having now listened to the album in full, I can say that he has definitely managed to avoid the 'sophomore slump' by delivering a pretty solid album. After listening to the earlier leaked tracks and snippets, I felt that Ne-Yo hadn't really pushed himself creatively and was just dishing out more of the same. However, the album has proven me wrong as there are quite a few great songs that aren't typically his style. Though I'm unsure whether this tops his fantasitc debut, 'Because of You' (due May 1st) is definitely worth a buy. Check out some of my highlights from the album (which I haven't posted already)...

Oscar Winner Jennifer Hudson has discussed some of the negative rumours that have surfaced since she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. The post, which is featured on her MySpace page, seems real sincere and makes you wonder if people only build you up to bring you down:

hey guys. once again i think its time to address these rumors thats been going on about me. there are 3 main ones that has been floating around and i want to address them personally so you guys can know the truth

1.) i turned down a movie role for 3 million dollars because of a nude scene and i wasnt the person getting nude. nothing about that is true. i want to do my album. and my fans have waited so patiently for me to put out an album and i appreciate everyone of you and thats why im focused on putting out my first project. and yes i will continue to still do movies.

2.) all of the american idol stuff and burger king comments. i never said anything about if i was better at burger king i would not be there either. and yes i did say american idol was a stepping stone. which it is! i didnt mean it in a bad way. and as i said in my previous interviews american idol is a stepping stone because had it not been for them no one would of knew of a jennifer hudson to call to audition for dreamgirls! its like everything i say referring to the show gets twisted around and makes me look like im being arrogant and a "diva" since alot of people seems to have that opinion about me and that is not me at all. im not bothered by these rumors because im use to it but i do read the boards and i see my fans are upset by some of the negative rumors concerning me and that is what hurts me the most is to see people who care about me being impacted by all of this.

3.) the soul train awards show and me trying to sabotoge it by not showing up. only thing i can say to this is that i was there! and i appreciate being honored there just as much as i appreciated being honored at the all the award shows i attended. but once again im just writing this for my fans, supporters, and friends who want to know the truth. i am a person with feelings and although i have been warned that things like this would happen to me, and since i am new to this let me be the first to tell you that i have sat back not to long ago just like you guys and read things about my favorite artist and let me tell you since im experiencing this first hand you guys cant believe everything you read because its not true. o one more thing. im grateful for all my blessings and i thank God for it everyday and no amount of fame will ever go to my head and make me think that im better than anyone because we are all equal. and as quickly as God gave everything he has given me he can take it away!
